The Toggenburg originated from Switzerland. New Zealand blood lines originated from England and Australia.
A Sturdy dairy type animal, vigourous and active. She likes to interact with people and her surroundings.
Brown with white facial and leg markings (swiss markings), the colour can vary between light fawn to deep chocolate, long fringes of hair along her back and hind legs are also common.
Her hardiness is her best attribute, along with her ability to adapt well and produce milk. Like the Saanen, the Toggenburg is a good milker. These two breeds are record holding milk producers.
Sable A new breed currently registered in New Zealand, derived from the pedigree Saanen, who were colour-carriers. The Sable can be of any colour and markings with at least 50% colour being desirable. Good milk producers (like their Saanen origins), they are hardy and adaptable. Gaining popularity, they are an attractive dairy goat suitable for commercial and domestic milk supply.
Anglo Nubian Derived from Eastern origins the Nubians are basically a dual purpose animal (meat and milk). They come in a variety of colours and patterns and with their long pendulous ears and Roman noses, make them appealing to some people. They are poor milk producers, but what little they produce is very high in butterfat, a rich creamy milk suitable for blending to produce cheeses. The Nubian is suitable for lifestyle and pet owners and not desired for commercial production. Because of their Eastern origins they are a high maintenance animal, needing a lot of care in New Zealand's cooler - wetter climate. Australia, United Kingdom and the United States of America have produced some outstanding Nubian dairy goats with good milk production.
Saanen Pronounced Sarnen originated from Switzerland. NZ Bloodlines come from Switzerland, England and Australia. A large all white animal, and by far the most popular dairy goat in the world. The saanen has many attributes, being very adaptable, hardy and an excellent milk producer (commonly known as the Friesian of the goat world). She is extremely affectionate, placid in nature. Her primary function being to eat and produce milk, thus making the the most suitable dairy goats for commercial production, hobby farmer or domestic household milk.
British Alpine A man-made breed which originated in England. These goats are large, elegant dairy goats. Very striking in their appearance, with black hair and the white markings on their face and legs. They are attributed for the ability to produce milk with higher milk solids (desirable for cheese making). However in a herd situation they can be quite disruptive and dominant. They are suitable for commercial production, hobby and domestic milk supplies.
